A degenerate dimension according to the Ralph Kimball definition, is a dimension key in a fact table that does not have its own dimension table.

It is also sometimes called a fact table dimension.

An order dimension is a common example of a degenerate dimension, as it is based on the order number, order date etc. that exists directly in the fact table.
